Fedora Classroom is a project that aims at increasing awareness among the users about the distribution and understanding how to better use it. It started off ambitiously almost a decade ago and has now been revamped by the members of the Fedora Join SIG.

Starting 28th July 2017, the revamped version of the project has successfully organized almost 6 classroom session on various topics like basics of FOSS, git, VIM, QA Testing and so on. Almost all these classes were held over IRC in the #fedora-classroom channel on Freenode.

Web Forge

After registering myself as the Club Captain of Mozilla Club Zeal, it was time to get to work and make the club the most active club on campus. The month of January was particularly busy because me and a few other veterans of the club had to pick out the best students from the campus to be the Executive members of the club. We got off to a great start in the year 2017. After carefully picking the right candidates for Technology Lead, Protect Lead and Teach Lead we started brainstorming about what our first event as Mozilla Campus Club will be. As the club had to conduct activities under all the three domains, we thought why not bring them together and conduct a grand event? This little thought paved the way to our club’s first ever event of 2017 as a Mozilla Campus Club.

First bug fix for the Gecko engine

After a host of non-technical contributions to Mozilla,it was time to switch to the technical side. As a result, I started looking out for some bugs which I would be able to fix. That is when I landed on Bug 1308137 - Remove code around
IBMBIDI_SUPPORTMODE_*
.

The patch I provided was accepted today by Xidorn Quan.

The process of fixing this bug was extremely informative and fun. As I opened the files to make changes to the code I was greeted with very unfamiliar syntax. Surely not the sort of code you’ll ever encounter in four years of Computer Engineering. I had to understand, even if at a very superficial level, what each snippet of code did in order to make the desired changes. Fixing bugs in open source projects is definitely a test of your patience, determination and most importantly technical expertise.

MozCafé Feb’16
